Music: Giacomo Meyerbeer
Text: Parley P. Pratt, Charles Wesley
Arr. Jason Cassel
After singing this hymn on Christmas a friend told me that in order for this hymn to truly be a Christmas hymn the words need to be backwards. She explained that Jesus, in the Pre-mortal Realm, was exalted to His throne before coming of humble birth and so it only made sense. I thought about her insight again and again. The more I thought about it the more I thought of the power of the Atonement and of Easter. An angel asked Nephi, “Knowest thou the condescension of God?” (1 Nephi 11:16) before showing the Lord coming of humble birth. I hope that this arrangement captures the very essences of His condescension and glorious atonement and resurrection.
Text:
Jesus once created this earth,
Now He comes of humble birth,
Once over this earth He reigned,
Now He suffers grief and pain.
Once the Lord the Great I AM,
Now a meek and lowly Lamb,
Once His chariot was a cloud,
Now upon the cross He bows.
Once exalted to a throne,
Now forsaken, left alone,
As their King He once was known,
Now rejected by His own.
Now LIVES AGAIN our Glorious King,
Where, O death, is now thy sting?
Once He died our souls to save,
Where thy victory, O grave?
Thus He now shall bear no more!
